Never pour automotive fluids down any drain. Oil, transmission or brake
fluid, grease, gas, and antifreeze are all toxic -- These might not only
harm your system and add poison into the immediate environment, but if
you have a well, has potential of poisoning your drinking water. Never
pour these products on the ground. Contact your local recycling center
to find out how to get rid of these safely.
Never dispose of pesticides or herbicides down any drain, or rinse out
pesticide or herbicide containers over a drain. Better yet, never use these
products. For the same reason as #1.

Never dispose of fats, grease, or cooking oil down household drains. These
will build and clog the system and pipes.
Suggestion: Pour off all cooking fats and grease into a container with
lid. Dispose of in trash when full.
Don't use a garbage disposal, or put down any drains -- food (such as coffee
grounds, meat bones), or any other material that is non-biodegradable,
or biodegrades slowly. These will clog and create imbalance.
Never dispose of any non-biodegradable objects, such as cigarette
butts, disposable diapers, condoms, sanitary napkins, or tampons down any
drain.
Use less water. Don't leave faucet running continuously while washing dishes.
Install low-flow shower heads, faucets, and toilets and/or: flush less
often; when showering -- get wet, turn off shower, soap up, turn shower
on to rinse; turn faucet off while brushing teeth; use a dishpan for washing
dishes and the water for watering plants; run full loads in washing machine
or dishwasher.
Don't use chemicals to "start up" or "clean" your system. These are expensive,
unnecessary and may actually harm your system and drinking water.
Don't connect sump pumps or backwash system sources to your septic. |
